Hope you didn’t think we’d leave you without a guide. We want you to stray away from the beaten path, find your will-o’-the-wisp, sink into the city’s patchwork history.

We are sharing some of our resources here - they might be added to this masterlist later on, as we find time. For starters, this is what we recommend if you are looking for some general background data on Hungary; the website of our statistical office. You search publications by select themes (say, justice or tourism).

If you are interested in specifics, here are some archives that can help you: here and here and here. You can find, for example, old publications of local newspapers here. 

For those of you who do not speak any Hungarian, the most exciting part of these archives is probably the map feature. Click on ‘browse map’, then select your layers and watch the magic happen. The historical layers scale lets you adjust the opacity of historical maps, so you can compare antique maps to the current Google Maps view. 

In English, the most easily navigable source we can recommend is the OSA archive. You can view Hungarian propaganda filmstrips, Free Europe Radio’s telex communication, and a collection of avantgarde, experimental films from Hungary. What are you waiting for?

If your are craving more propaganda, check out the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library’s collection of first world war posters. A good bunch of them are heavy with text but not all.

If you’re interested in some more historical footage, you can find an archive of historical newsreels called Filmhíradók Online (Film Newsreels Online) here. The news reels themselves don’t have subtitles but there are plenty of archival images you can search by topic, which should be enough to leave you at least with an impression of historical Budapest. There is also a selection of news items that contain English, if you do want to listen in. (The topics are also in Hungarian, but these are simple terms so you should be able to get by with the help of a simple dictionary.)

If you are interested in more images, head to Fortepan. You can search the more than 150000 photos using keywords in English, too, and select the era you want the results to be from with the help of a slider on the top of the page.

Finally, for the fic writers out there: you’ll need a title, too. Maybe, this time, forego American pop songs or Richard Siken; pick a Hungarian quote instead. That’s what Hungarians in Babel is for with its many translations.

Reméljük, hogy nem hitted, hogy kalauz nélkül hagyunk. Szeretnénk, ha letévednél a kijárt útról, hagynád, hogy a lidércfényed vezessen, belemerülnél a város összefércelt történelmébe. 

Megosztjuk itt néhány forrásunkat - lehet, ehhez a hivatalos listához is hozzáadjuk majd őket, ha lesz rá időnk. Először is, ezt ajánljuk, ha általános háttérinformációt keresel Magyarországról; a Központi Statisztikai Hivatal honlapja. A kiadványokat a témák kiválasztásával (pl. igazságszolgáltatás vagy turizmus) szűrheted. 

Ha érdekelnek a részletek, itt van néhány archívum, ami segíthet: itt és itt és itt. Ezeken megtalálhatod például magyar újságok régi kiadásait. 

Nyelvtől függetlenül is az egyik legérdekesebb része ezeknek az archívumoknak a térkép. Válaszd a ‘térkép böngészése’ opciót, majd válaszd ki a rétegeidet és figyeld, ahogy megtörténik a csoda. A történelmi rétegek csúszkája megengedi, hogy beállítsd a térképek áttetszőségét és így összehasonlítsd a jelenlegi Google Maps térképével. 

Magyar propaganda diafilmek, a Szabad Európa Rádió telex kommunikációi és avandgárd, kísérleti magyar filmek gyűjteménye megtalálhatóak az OSA archívumon. Mire vársz még? 

Ha még több propagandára vágysz, vess egy pillantást a Fővárosi Szabó Ervin könyvtár első világháborús plakátjainak gyűjteményére. 

Ha érdekelnek még történelmi felvételek, a Filmhíradók Online egy archívum történelmi híradásoknak. Kereshetsz téma alapján, ami segíthet képet kapni az akkori Budapestről. 

Ha inkább képeket néznél, a Fortepan a te oldalad. Több mint 150 000 fotó közül válogathatsz kulcsszavak segítségével, és az oldal tetején található csúszka segítségével kiválaszthatod a kort, ami érdekel. 

Végül, a fic íróknak: szükséged lesz egy címre is, és ha angolul írnál, ez az alkalom tökéletes arra, hogy magad mögött hagyjd kicsit az amerikai pop dalokat vagy Richard Sikent; válassz inkább egy magyar idézetet. A Magyarul Bábelben segít angolul is megtalálni a kedvenc verseidet.
